TWO GIRLS RESCUED OFF THE BEACH AT EDGEWATER COMMUNITY
Two 12-year-old girls who found themselves stuck in Hood Canal picked a good place to need help.
"All the things were in the right place at the right time," said Jeremy Schumacher.
Schumacher helped rescue the girls who had been swept into the canal as the tide came in Saturday afternoon.
Schumacher lives along the portion of the the canal where the girls got in trouble.
A neighbor heard the girls screaming. As the neighbor called 911, Schumacher put on his dry suit, grabbed two life vests and swam out to help the girls.
He said they were about 200 yards off the beach in front of his house.
Schumacher, a retired Navy veteran, trains scuba divers.
He has been trained on how to keep people calm during rescues.
"On the swim in they were asking questions like if they were going to die," said Schumacher, "I assured them no one was going to die today."
While Schumacher brought the girls back to shore a rescue boat arrived and took them to an ambulance.
They were cold, but did not have to go to the hospital.

How to Reserve the Beach Cabana
WANT TO HAVE A PARTY at the beach? Since the cabana use is on a first-come first-serve basis, it is recommended to make reservations for your planned parties. Reservations can be made by calling 360-626-1660.
Only members whose dues are current and their guest may use community club properties.
Reservations will not normally be taken earlier than 90 days prior to your event. A reservation does not provide exclusivity to the beach—only the cabana facility, tables and chairs. Other community members may still use the beach/play area. Remember, children under 12 must be accompanied at the beach by an adult (at least 18). Thank you!
Kitsap County Burn Ban
THE NEW STATE LAW that went into effect on January 1, 2001 prohibits outdoor burning within all cities and urban growth areas in Kitsap County. Although this ban does not include Edgewater development (we're outside Poulsbo city limits), it is still important to be responsible when burning. For current information on burn bans, call the Outdoor Burn Information Line at 360-297-4888. Remember, burn barrels are illegal!
